Fourteen Holy Helpers was the original Ebenezer Memorial Church. It was built out of hand-crafted bricks. The first service was held by Christian Metz, the leader of the Ebenezers. When the Ebenezers moved to Iowa in 1864, the land was sold to the Fourteen Holy Helpers Church Congregation who made changes to the original design to suit their needs.
The group known as the Fourteen Holy Helpers originated in the 14th century in Europe during the black plague when everyone was trying to survive the night. These helpers became saints against plague, illness, and injury. People would come from all around to obtain their prayers and blessings against all ailments. Their legacy would be continued in Western New York with the Fourteen Holy Helpers Church. Many people with injuries and ailments would come to pray at the church’s altar for healing to any wound or illness. After praying these people would leave their crutches at the church’s altar in hopes that their problems would be solved.
